Philippine National Statistics Office
The Philippine National Statistics Office is the government agency of the Republic of the Philippine that gathers various data to generate statistical indicators for use in various industries in the private sector, in various government agencies, and numerous private groups and non-government organizations (NGO) for their respective statistical-gathering purposes.
The National Statistics Office (NSO) is the major statistical agency responsible in collecting, compiling, classifying, producing, publishing, and disseminating general-purpose statistics as provided for in Commonwealth Act No. 591.
The mandate governing the National Statistics Office has been enacted through various laws and decrees from the Republic of the Philippine.
The vision of this agency is to be a recognized world-class provider of statistical and civil registration products and services. Its mission is to be the primary statistical agency of the Philippine government.
On the main web page of the Philippine National Statistics Office, you will see various statistical figures that describe the Philippine population, inflation rate, balance of trace, exports and imports, unemployment, literacy, family income, GNP and GDP, among many other general figures that statistically describe the Philippine.
The National Statistics Office also provides sectoral statistics on the following sectoral divisions: Agriculture and Fisheries, Business and Industry, Construction and Housing, Education and Mass Media, Energy, Health, Income and Poverty, Labor and Employment, Population and Demography, Prices, Trade and Vital Statistics.
Since we are here to give readers a balanced view of our featured topics, we shall also cover some matters pertaining to the NSO from a Filipino citizen's point of view. We choose the topic of obtaining birth certificates from the NSO.
Every Filipino probably has had at least one encounter with the National Statistics Office. One example we can give is the securing of birth certificates. Various government agencies require authenticated documents for a variety of purposes. First and foremost among these documents is the birth certificate. The birth certificate is a document signifying the birth of a citizen. This document indicates the date and place of your birth, your birth name, among other things. This document is a standard document that is required for various purposes when dealing with the Philippine bureaucratic system. For example, this certificate is necessary when securing police or NBI clearance, when getting a passport for the first time, when traveling for first time as a minor, when marrying, when securing a student driver's license permit, and for other purposes as well.
Many Filipinos consider the securing of birth certificates from the National Statistics Office to be an indirect form of taxation, since the office requires you to pay for an authenticated copy of your birth certificate and for other documents that they keep. It is OK to do this once. But to do this twice or more for various purposes can be time consuming and will make anyone realize that this is just bureaucracy in action.
Of course, we shall not only focus on the bureaucratic nature of the Philippine government or its various agencies. Bureaucracy is common in all governments all over the world, without exception. The only difference is that in some countries, the bureaucracy is less. Of course, the National Statistics Office is not just there to add to government bureaucracy. The office is also an agency where you can secure very useful information for free or for a minimal fee. These information are regarding statistical data that can be used by anyone for their respective purposes.
Thus, if you want to have a general picture of the numeric indicators that relate to the Philippine, all you have to do is go to the National Statistics Office website for the most up-to-date information on the statistical data you are looking for. Their website can be accessed at http://www.census.gov.ph.
