Filipino nurses and
The Philippine Nursing Board

In the Philippine, board exams are usually abbreviated to "board" and terms such as "Nursing Board Exams" can be referred to as "Nursing Board" without any ambiguity or confusion.

The demand for the nursing profession has once again reached its high point starting in 2000 up to the present 2006.

However, before anyone can be licensed as a nurse in the Philippine, a basic requirement for each nursing professional aspirant is the passing of the Philippine nursing board.

After taking a two or four year course on nursing, candidates usually review for some months before taking the board examinations. The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) is the Philippine government agency that regulates the nursing profession.

Part of its job is to foster the highest level of professional and ethical standards in the nursing profession. Aside from administering the board exams, the PRC also regulates the issuance of licenses for Filipino nurses.

The last wave of great demand for the nurses prior to 2000 occurred between 1985 to 1990. In this day and time however, there is such a strong demand for Filipino nurses worldwide that there have been more young people taking the nursing courses, from two-year crash courses to four-year university level nursing.

Filipino nurses are well known all over the world as dedicated to their profession. This however, is just the number two rate that makes Filipino nurses very in-demand.

The number one rate or factor that distinguishes Filipino nurses from their other counterparts in different parts of the world is that the Filipino nurses work with sincere affection, care, and hospitality.

In other words, Filipinos work with the proper attitude. The Filipino has usually a soft heart for the sick, the elderly, and the needy.

Since nurses are needed in countries where there are increasing needs to care for the elderly and sick, Filipinos are undoubtedly the number one choice not just for nurses but even caregivers and medical professionals.

Many have looked down upon the nursing and caregiving profession since they equated this with being professional nannies. We think there is no problem with this.

Nannies exemplify virtue, patience, love and a host of other positive virtues. Thus, the stereotype of Filipinos as nannies, nurses, or caregivers, should be taken by the Filipinos as a compliment.

This simply means that the Filipinos know not only how to love, but to love with affection. This is the positive trait that are looked for by patients.

The nursing profession necessarily involves dealings with sick persons. The most important thing that a sick person needs, more than the medicines, is the care and affection show to him. If you ever were sick, the last thing you would expect would be someone to deal rudely with you.

Since Filipinos have an innate sense of affection and sensitivity to others, Filipino nurses naturally carry that trait anywhere they are. We cannot over emphasize the demands for Philippine nurses but suffice it to say that it is not just sheer talent and ability that makes them fit for nursing jobs, but their proper attitude when dealing with their patients.

In June 2006, there was an issue regarding alleged leaking of board examination questions to several would-be nurses, a day or two prior to the board exam. Although this issue is an isolated case, the Philippine government has started to file the appropriate charges to those allegedly involved in releasing some questions to the board examinees.

The Philippine nursing board has truly been a great instrument in regulating the nursing profession. There were at lot of nursing schools that have sprung up in the course of the few years prior to 2006 due to the steady demand for nurses worldwide.

Generally, all these schools provide adequate training for would-be nurses. Some of these schools have International accreditations.

In the Philippine however, it is not enough to work as a nurse even if you came from an accredited training institution for nurses.

Any individual who wants to acquire a nursing license from the Philippine, either for the purposes of working locally or working abroad, must pass the Philippine nursing board.
